It’s Time for the WNBL 2020 Season

From a year that is full of unprecedented events, we welcome another – this one far more positive than others. The WNBL 2020 season is kicking off and while many other codes are on break, players and fans will get to soak up 60 games in 38 days.

Packing in 6-weeks’ worth of high intensity skill and sheer talent will be a treat for all fans of Australian women’s basketball, so let’s explore some more of what makes this season so unique.

Queensland Hubs

With movement around Australia restricted or simply non-existent for some states, the WNBL needed to find a stable and safe place to host the season, and once again Queensland reigned supreme as the unlikely saviour of sporting codes in 2020.

Based in North Queensland, players and personnel will reside in official hubs and play across three cities. With seven teams joining the Townsville Fire in Queensland to play matches across Cairns, Mackay and Townsville in a 56-game regular season.

Changes to the Game

Unlike regular seasons, the best-of-three finals series have been temporarily cancelled. Instead, four separate finals will be played, including two semi-finals, a preliminary final and a grand final – the latter match scheduled for December 20th.

There will be eight games played at the Mackay Basketball Stadium and 20 at the Cairns arena – a pop up venue created for netball and basketball games. This means that Townsville Stadium and the Townsville Entertainment Centre will host 32 matches, including the entire final series.

More Exposure

Sport has suffered this year, and fans have too. But while not everyone can sit courtside and cheer on their favourite players, it doesn’t mean the support isn’t there. And thanks to the November-to-December timeslot of the season, the league will receive more exposure than ever before. There will be very little interference from other sporting codes during the WNBL’s schedule, allowing the game prime opportunity to showcase the talent it beholds.

Greatness Still to Come

The start of the WNBL 2020 season is just the tip of the iceberg for a very exciting time in Australian women’s basketball. It signals the commencement of an inspiring three-year period in which players and fans have the rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and hosting of the FIBA 2022 Women’s Basketball World Cup to look forward to.
