BOOMERS COMPLETE CLEAN SWEEP ON HOME SOIL
The Australian Boomers finished the first round of the FIBA Men’s World Cup Qualifiers with wins over Guam and the Philippines, placing them on top of Group A with 6 wins from 6 games.
The Boomers had a solid win over Guam on Friday night at RAC Arena, with a 124-52 victory. Tyrese Proctor, Angus Glover, Bryce Cotton and Jack McVeigh all had standout games contributing to the 72-point victory.
The team backed up their performance on Monday night at RAC Arena, with a 92-49 win over the Philippines. The Philippines fought hard in the second quarter, but the Boomers took a 14-point lead at the main break, before running away with it in the second half, to win the game by 43 points. Bryce Cotton, Josh Bannan, Mitch Creek and Keanu Pinder all had standout games for the home side.
But across both games, all eyes were on Bryce Cotton, as he made his debut for the Boomers, and he didn’t disappoint. Playing back at RAC Arena, on a court he knows so well from his time with the Wildcats, Cotton scored 18 points in his debut game on Friday night, before backing it up with 21 points in Game 2. If this is just the start of Cotton’s career as a Boomer, we can’t wait to see what else he has in store.
The Boomers now advance to Group E in the second round of qualifiers, alongside Syria, Iran, Jordan, New Zealand and the Philippines, with these games set to begin in late August.
